Margaret River Adventures

Next stop on our south westerly adventures was the Margaret River, another place we were excited to go check out. The plan was to spend 4 nights here, before we continued on to Busselton and then on to Bunbury.

Fri, May 26th – (Day 50)

MARGARET RIVER – It was hard to believe we were 50 days into our trip already. In fact, it was time to move on again, so we said a sad farewell to the lovely Karri Valley and moved on to Margaret River.

Fortunately it was only a short 1 hour drive so nice and easy for us. We quickly setup our caravan and then went for a walk into town to grab some lunch. We stumbled upon some vegetarian cafe called The Urban Bean which was quite nice.

We spent the next hour or so exploring the main street which was absolutely beautiful and spent the rest of the afternoon at the caravan park. It was another weekend and another Carlton game, they lost yet again, this time to Sydney.

All in all, a pretty quiet day today where we didn’t get up to a whole lot. Tomorrow we planned to explore the region some more.

Saturday, May 27th – (Day 51)

We started the morning with a little walk to a local farmers market. As usual, it was a pretty bland market, but still something to do nonetheless.

Our plan for today was to go around the region visiting different breweries. The area is supposedly famous for wineries, but given neither of us like the taste of cat piss, the breweries were a better option.

First stop was CBCo Brewing about 15 minutes out of town. We grabbed some lunch here and actually stayed for a fair while as it had a pretty awesome ambiance. We brought our boardgames with us too and had some fun.

Next stop was Margaret River Brewhouse where we ended up staying until it got dark. Then we stopped via Coles to grab some stir fry ingredients, and headed back to make some tea and settle in for the night.

Sunday, May 28th – (Day 52)

Sunday morning meant a double piano lesson for Adam. Today was an awesome one as we learnt the Succession intro theme. Good timing, as the final episode ever was airing this weekend.

Today was a pretty lazy day of lounging around at our caravan park. About 3pm we decided we should go do something and found a big maze nearby called A Maze’n.

This maze was massive, one of the biggest we’d seen. We had a race to the middle, then a race out. The property was a huge garden and they had little games setup everywhere like giant chess, checkers, jenga, etc. Plus some little mazes and stuff.

We had a game of chess and checkers (Adam won both) and explored the garden area. Then we headed back to the park and continued what we were doing earlier, which was absolutely nothing!

Monday, May 29th – (Day 53)

Today was our last day in Margaret River so we thought we’d do a cave tour and take a day trip to Augusta. The caves are quite substantial around here, so we had to book ahead of time.

First stop was Lake Cave. Somehow we had timed our tour perfectly as the cave lake was full of water, apparently the first time in 40 years, and likely the last time for another 50+ years. Our guide kept telling us many times how good our timing was, so it felt special.

The cave was amazing. It was full of crystals and the lake inside was beautiful. They even setup a light show which made it look even better.

After an hour tour, we had to hightail it to our next tour at 11:30am at Jewell Caves. This was a lot larger and very different to Lake Cave. There was no water in this one, but this cave was massive and like a labyrinth inside.

Jewell Cave was also stunning

We learnt that Tasmania Tigers used to knock around in the area and they found a fossil of one in this cave from 10,000 years ago. Like the previous cave, they had a light show setup in this one too.

After the tour, it was on to Augusta, where we stopped at the bakery. Augusta was really, really tiny so there wasn’t that much to see. We drove about 10 minutes to the Leeuwin Lighthouse, not knowing what to expect.

Enjoying the Leeuwin Lighthouse

Turns out this is the most south westerly point in all of Australia, where the Pacific and Indian oceans meet and cause some pretty rough seas. We snuck in for free, avoiding the $15 entrance charge and spent about an hour here. It was a pretty cool place to see really.

After that we headed back to the caravan park, stopping at Hamelin Bay along the way. Now this was a pretty cool looking area, the ocean was that lovely blue colour and the sky looked unreal. We explored this area a bit, then headed back home feeling pretty tired.

That was the end of our Margaret River trip. Next stop was Busselton tomorrow for 4 nights, followed by Bunbury next weekend.
