Denmark & Karri Valley

The next week of our trip was made up of five nights in Denmark and three nights in Karri Valley, two small places in the south west, but both recommended to us by a lot of people.

Thursday, May 18th – (Day 42))

DENMARK: Time to move again today, but unlike other drives in this trip, this one was a super short 50 minute drive from Albany! In fact, we got to Denmark so early that we had to kill some time in town before checking in at the park.

But before we left though, we said goodbye to Dolphin for the last time. Safe adventures our friend.

Random boardgames shop in Denmark

Back on the road, we found a carpark just off the main street and found a cafe to have a coffee and snack at, as well as doing some work on our laptops.

After that, we found a random games star which surprisingly had a large range of games. We picked up Hive (which we’d been looking for ages) and an old favourite – Ecosystem. Straight away we knew this would be our kind of town, it was small, quiet and beautiful.

Our awesome camp spot for 5 nights

The caravan park was stunning too. It was spacious, green and had a really friendly vibe. Our campsite was lovely and shady and we had our own area with barely anyone nearby.

After a bite to eat, we went for a walk to the oddly named Ocean Beach about a 15 minute walk away. We carried on the walk up to Lions Lookout which gave us a decent view of the beach. It was a nice area, but I’m not sure it looked like the best swimming beach with rough water and lots of seaweed.

Denmark’s aptly named Ocean Beach

When we got back to the park we spent time reading until the sun went down, had some tea and didn’t get up to much else.

Friday, May 19th – (Day 43)

Today’s plan was to hang around at the park until lunch, then head to town for another look around. While this park didn’t have table tennis, it had a real tennis court, so we had a quick game before heading to town!

We decide to play one set and then continue the game for the rest of our stay here. Adam took it out 6-2, but it was closer than the scoreline suggests.

After lunch we explored the town some more. Adam got a monkeyface biscuit and then we headed in to the Boston Brewery for an afternoon of games and beer!

Beers at the Boston Brewery

We had a best of three series of Ecosystem, Hive and Love Letter. With the series tied at 1-1 coming into the final game, Linnie blitzed it to take out the series win.

Afterwards we did our usual thing, then spent the night watching the last two episodes of Ted Lasso season 2.

Saturday, May 20th – (Day 44)

Our plan today was to do absolutely nothing. It would be our first day chilling out at a caravan park and doing nothing and fortunately we got a sunny day.

A day of sitting around in this spot

Honestly not much to report for today, it was about as chilled out as you can get. It was the Dreamtime round in the AFL so we had the radio going in the background all day, which was made better with a few of the games ending in epic finishes.

Sunday, May 21st – (Day 45)

Today’s plan was to be much the same as yesterday, just sitting around and doing nothing at the park. We were in such a nice caravan park and such a nice site, that we didn’t really need to leave.

The afternoon was spent listening to the Carlton vs Collingwood game (Carlton got flogged yet again…) and chatting to our neighbours up the road about our caravans. They had a little teardrop caravan like ours, but a lot smaller. It was a Toucan teardrop which was basically just a bed and you couldn’t even stand up in it.

Nice setting for a bit of tennis

After the footy, we had a late evening game of tennis. Linda took out the second set 6-0 and I was leading 4-2 in the third set before we decided to suspend play until tomorrow.

There were a bunch of kids all around us crying and yelling, then people smoking up on the deck with the wind wafting down to our court, so I was pretty fed up.

We then sat around some more, made some tea and that was pretty much it for today.

Monday, May 22nd – (Day 46)

It was finally time to do some exploring today. First up weas the Dinosaur World about 40 minutes away.

We weren’t sure what to expect here, but it was pretty cool. It was calle Dinosaur World, but it was basically a wildlife and reptile world as well. Inside was life size models of dinosaurs, as well as live reptiles. Outside were heaps of birds and some kangaroos.

The birds were super friendly and came to sit on our shoulders, plus we got to feed the kangaroos. Adam even held a python snake for the first time in his life.

After those adventures, it was time to head to the Valley Of The Giants tree top walk. Now this was a pretty incredible experience. They had created an almost 50m high boardwalk that takes you around the top of the trees. Not for the faint hearted if you’re scared of heights!

Next we went for a drive to Peaceful Bay, but there was not much happening here so we continue on to Green Pool about 20 minutes away. This was a beautiful little beach, and the nearby Elephant Rocks were amazing to see as well.

By now it was getting late in the evening so we headed back and had an early tea, so we could pack up all our outside stuff so it wouldn’t get all wet from condensation.

Green Pool – This would be awesome in summer

Tuesday, May 23rd – (Day 47)

KARRI VALLEY – Onwards to a new location today, the Karri Valley! This area got rave reviews when we were researching the area, so we decided to stop in for three nights.

Beautiful spot for the next 3 nights

Fortunately it was a reasonable quick drive, only the 2.5 hours. We fueled up, got ourselves a veggie pie and hit the road. On the way we listened to Denver Nuggets sweep the Lakers 4-0 and make their first ever Finals. It’s safe to say that city would be rocking pretty hard today.

We arrived to Karri Valley around 2pm, only to learn that we booked our accommodation for June, rather than May, doh! Fortunately they had a spare spot (tons of spare spots, as it turns out…). It’s a brand new park, so all the facilities and everything are brand new. Plus they have a big rec room as well as tennis courts. We were going to like this spot!

Miserable weather, but a lovely spot to work

The bad news was it was getting pretty dark with a storm coming and then not long after setting up, it started pissing rain. And it rained for most of the night, so we couldn’t really get up to much!

We had tea in the kitchen area (this was super big like the one in Esperance) and Adam finally got his old retro soccer manager game working and enjoyed some nostalgia. After tea we played some boardgames and watched the second last ever episode of Succession.

Wednesday, MaY 24th – (Day 48)

The morning was spent at the caravan park. Adam played his soccer game some more, we had a bite to eat at lunch time and then after lunch we thought we’d go explore some of the hiking paths.

Adam meets a new little friend

Beedelup Loop Walk was the recommended hiking spot around here so we decided to tack that, which was about 6km. The walk was surrounded by the massive karri trees which go nearly 100m into the air, there was some you could even walk through.

Along the walk was Beedelup Falls which was also good to see. Then we took the loop back and come across a pig that we made ourselves an acquaintance too. He was super friendly and came running from the other side of the pen to come say hello to us.

It was about 3pm when we got back to the park and we’d organised to have an online games night with our friends back home at 6pm their time, so 4pm for us. So we grabbed some snacks, had a quick rest and then set ourselves up in the massive recreation room.

The games night was a huge success. We could talk to each other over Discord and we played for a few hours. It was good to catch up with everyone again, albeit online. After that, we had a late tea about 8:30pm and then settled in for the night.

Thursday, May 25th – (Day – 49)

On our walk yesterday we come across an activities thing which included archery, mini golf, canoeing etc, so we booked that in for a day of adventures today.

First up was archery at 10am. It was the first time either of us have done it, but it turned out Adam had some natural talent. We had 3 rounds including a points round, speed round and hit the water bottle round.

Adam won the points round 51/49/49 to 32/29/20, while lost the speed round 30-42. Somehow he managed to hit the water bottle from distance which was a fair effort!

After that we had a game of mini golf which Adam won in a 50-65 landslide. Then after the game we went back to get a bit of a lunch.

The next adventure was kayaking at 1:30pm where we spent most of our time trying to rescue drowning bees from the water. Between us I reckon we saved 30+ bees, so we did our job for the day!

Kayaking and saving bees

Then our final activity for the day was the farm animals. We got to see that pig from yesterday, who was a young lass named Maisey and she loved pats and getting fed vegetables. There were other farm animals there, but Maisey was the coolest.

For tea we made pizza and played our new boardgames up in the huge kitchen area. Our new game Hive was a hit. Then we went back to the caravan and chilled out, Adam playing his soccer game some more.

Adam and Maisey meet again. New besties!
